Overview 
As one of the fastest emerging Latinx markets in the country, the Charlotte region has experienced significant change over the last two decades. Latinx individuals now make up nearly 15% of the Charlotte population, and that number continues to climb. Immigrants to the Charlotte region encounter a number of obstacles to success, which is particularly true for children entering the public-school system. Without a quality preschool education, children enter Kindergarten 12-14 months behind, are half as likely to read proficiently in third grade and are four times as likely to drop out of high school on average. 
 
Charlotte Bilingual Preschool (CltBP) has dedicated over 20 years to providing innovative, two-generation solutions for preparing Spanish-speaking children for success. Core programs include the only 5-star licensed dual language Preschool Program in the state, Family Programs designed in partnership with families, and the national evidence-based ParentChild+ home visiting program. We also advocate for dual language learners at the local- and state-level. And we partner strategically to provide wraparound services such as family counseling, occupational therapy, and throughout the pandemic, basic needs support. In 2020, we also began partnering with Read Charlotte to hire and train Family Engagement Specialists from our family community to empower other families with tools to support their children’s literacy at home in a new Reading Bridge program.
 
Opportunity 
Building on this momentum, CltBP’s board of directors approved a game-changing strategic plan in early 2020 that includes dramatic expansion over the next ten years, growing its impact to meet the needs of ten times as many children and their families annually. This plan calls for expanding reach through partnerships with other preschools, evolving the current preschool into a full-day early learning center, and developing a dual-education early learning workforce.
 
 
The Role
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Controller manages our accounting records. Ultimately, the Controller helps maintain Charlotte Bilingual Preschool’s financial health and our ability to provide an employee-oriented, high-performance culture by managing risk and preserving assets, running an efficient and effective financial operation, influencing CltBP’s future direction, and helping drive execution so we can serve 1,500 children in the next 9 years.
 
Essential Duties
  • Oversees relationship with outsourced accounting firm (CLA)
  • Supervises and reviews the work of the Finance Assistant who supports CltBP’s day-to-day transactions, including expenses and payroll
  • Serves as staff liaison with Board Treasurer and Finance Committee
  • Manages the fiscal functions of the organization, including budgeting, monitoring, and reporting of income and expenses, investments, and cashflow
  • Oversees all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, and GL
  • Oversees cash flow planning, transfers of funds, payroll, and banking relationships to ensure availability of funds as needed
  • Coordinates and directs the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts (and reports, investigates and resolves variances)
  • Oversees the timely preparation of monthly financial statements by contracted Accounting Firm (CLA)
  • Manages the audit engagement by organizing and providing requested documentation, ensuring timely completion and approval
  • Monitors financial reports and determines ways to reduce costs and maximize efficiency
  • Monitors fiscal compliance with legal and grant requirements, in keeping with sound nonprofit financial practices
  • Works with CLA to research technical accounting issues for compliance
  • Manages and complies with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Works with tax accountant on tax preparation, reviews tax return, and ensures timely filing
  • Develops and documents business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
  • Reviews document retention policy to inform organization wide application
  • Assists Executive Director with important financial decisions and fiscal planning
  • Keeps up to date on the financial markets and works with financial adviser to ensure organization follows a responsible investment strategy
  • Assesses current accounting operations, offers recommendations for improvement, and implements new processes
  • Develops and monitors business performance metrics
  • Assists with hiring, training, and retaining skilled accounting team members
 
Required Qualifications & Competencies
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance and 5+ years’ experience in the area; experience working with a non-profit is preferred
  • Understanding of US GAAP and advanced knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping procedures
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks or other accounting software required
  • Advanced MS Excel skills (creating spreadsheets and using financial functions)
  • Ability to build relationships at all levels of the organization
  • Clear, precise communication skills and ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Strong business acumen and analytical skills with the ability to deliver accurate and detailed reports in a timely manner
  • Demonstrated organizational and time-management skills
  • Project leadership skills and ability to drive accounting processes
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines under pressure
  • Keen sense of urgency and dedication to follow up to inquiries from business partners
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English with proficiency in reading and writing in both languages preferred
